White Shark Drowns Humpback Whale

The event, the first known of its kind, took place off the coast of South Africa. Drone footage shows the shark biting the juvenile whale's tail, afterwards putting weight on the whale's head to drag it underwater, eventually drowning it.

The footage of the incident is scheduled to air on Tuesday, July 28, in the documentary about Shark vs. Whale as part of Nat Geo's Sharkfest. When marine biologist Ryan Johnson, research coordinator for Blue Wilderness Research Unit, reviewed the footage he recognised the shark by its dorsal fin; she was named Helen as one of 50 sharks tagged in 2013. The program looks at humpback whale migration patterns and at the points where white sharks and whales cross paths, as the whales make their way back to Antarctica after visiting the lower latitudes where they breed.
