More Data, More Discussion
The last group discussion before the two-day break (Friday and Saturday in Geneva) about the three proposals being considered at CITES CoP18 featured leaders from the IUCN, the International Union for Conservation of Nature; FAO, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations; and, ICCAT, the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas.
Each group presented their interpretation of the state of mako sharks. From our standpoint, we continue to follow the IUCN and their Endangered, Red List designations for both shortfin and longfin makos. Their situation is just too precarious to leave their protection to chance.
The vote on the three proposals for Appendix II will be Sunday, August 25. Keep the pressure on, if you haven’t yet please Make Calls for Makos!
