Dear SRI Newsgroup Members:
THE GALAPAGOS SHARKS NEED YOUR HELP
As many of you know, SRI began sharks studies within the Galapagos
Marine Preserve in 2001. So far we have conducted three
expeditions there. We have a planned expedition coming up
October 5-14. SRI now has to conduct it's research activities
from on board one of the Galapagos National Park's vessels, the
Guadeloupe River. In order for us to be able to use this
vessel we need to cover the cost of fuel and food for the crew
during the expedition. The total cost comes to $5,000. SRI
needs your help to raise this amount so that the work in the Galapagos
can continue. The research there is critical. The
Marine Preserve is under constant and increasing pressure from
the fishing industry to open up the park to commercial longlining.
As you know, this would destroy the shark population within
the Marine Preserve. The National Park needs the data that
we can provide them to help them manage and protect the area.
Sometimes it seems like a never ending battle, but it is
a battle that we must continue if sharks are to survive, if the
Galapagos sharks are to survive. Imagine the damage that
one 20 mile long line with thousands of hooks attached would do.
Entire shark populations would be wiped out in a matter
of days. We cannot allow this to happen. Please help
us. No dollar amount is too small. Contact SRI at
(609) 921-3522 or (908) 510-8046 with your pledge.
