There are several ways
that you can support the Shark Research Institute and provide tax
savings for the donor.
The Shark Research Institute encourages outright gifts, planned
gifts, and bequests for a strong endowment.
Outright gifts are needed to meet current ongoing expenses and provide
flexible dollars for new research opportunities. Leadership gifts
ensure support for education and capital needs.
Outright Gifts
Cash: A gift of cash is
the simplest way to support SRI. A cash gift is fully tax deductible
up to 50% of the donor’s adjusted gross income for the year
in which the gift is made and provides immediate support to SRI.
Securities: Gifts of securities are tax
deductible at their fair market value. In addition, if a gift is
made of appreciated securities, the donor pays no tax on the capital
gain.
Gifts of Real Estate: Gifts of real estate can
be donated as outright gifts or used to fund a trust that pays income.
Also, a donor can contribute property but retain the right to live
in it for life.
Gifts that Pay Income
Gift Annuity: This vehicle is an attractive way
to make a gift and retain a fixed income for the life of the beneficiary.
Rates vary depending on the age of the beneficiary.
Charitable Remainder Trusts: These large, separately
managed trusts will pay either fixed income or a percentage of the
market value of the trust, which is valued annually. They may run
for a lifetime or for a term of years.
Membership and
Annual Gifts
These donations support conservation and scientific research
and allow donors to learn about cutting-edge science.
“The Shark Research Institute believes that your participation
is integral to our mission and offer opportunities for you to participate.
Contributions from individuals provides unrestricted income, allowing
our researchers the flexibility to follow their instincts, unconstrained
by funding agency guidelines.
“Science is filled with breakthroughs that resulted from a
leap of imagination. Please assist our scientists by sending a gift
that permits this kind of freedom.”
Membership has its benefits, including SRI’s quarterly newsletter
and the opportunity to participate in our field research and conservation.
If you are already a member, please renew and, if possible, increase
your support. Thank you!”
Leadership Gifts
These gifts support special projects and programs of the Shark
Research.
The office of Leadership Gifts works with individuals who wish
to support special projects and programs at SRI. Donors may designate
their commitments to specific areas of scientific research or to
funding priorities within the campaign. This department works closely
with SRI’sffice of Planned Giving.
SRI stays in close touch with donors on the uses of their gifts,
and encourages them to see first-hand the impact their gifts are
making to our programs.
SRI is profoundly grateful for its leadership gifts and continues
to rely on support from the private sector, which guarantees its
intellectual freedom, the flexibility to pursue cutting-edge research,
and a secure financial future.
Planned
Gifts and Bequests
For some donors, a bequest is an easy way to make a significant
gift. Knowledge of an individual’s intent to put SRI in his
or her will helps the leadership plan for the future. The donor
can designate a dollar amount, a percentage of the estate, or name
SRI as the remainderman after all other bequests have been paid.
